Getting Ready for the Holidays!

Whew – It’s been a while since I’ve had time to write on the blog – thank heavens for my daughter Jenny who has been busy and keeping in touch with you. Since I last wrote, Keith and I have been to Toronto for the big Creativ Festival, and we had a great time there. We had my daughter Jenny working in the booth with us so it was wonderful to spend some time with her, we sponsored SImon Haskins at the show and enjoyed showing him around Toronto a bit on his first visit there, and we also were happy to have Ange Ross, our Canadian Jenny Haskins educator, working with us there too. On my return from Toronto, I turned around and left two days later to fly to Houston, TX with Pam, the manager of our Abbotsford store. Houston is the home to fall Quilt Market and Pam and I had a great few days as we saw all kinds of new and exciting products in the sewing and quilting worlds. Since we’ve been home, I’ve been busy going through mountains of product literature, trying to decide which of the wonderful new things that we saw we’ll be featuring on our website and in our stores next.  In my next blog, I’ll share some photos from Houston. Until then, watch the website over the next few weeks as some fabulous new things are added.

We were thrilled to come home with our very own GO! Baby Fabric Cutter! The GO! Baby will be available for sale very shortly – we are excitedly anticipating her arrival. This little GO! Cuts just the same way her big sister does, but is much lighter and smaller to carry around – perfect for taking to class with you. She will cut using any of the existing 5” and 6” wide fabric cutting dies, and there are several new ones coming for her as well. If you’d like to find a faster and easier way to cut, that gives prefer precision, a GO! Fabric Cutter is the way to go (pun intended!)

Probably just like you, I’m busy trying to plan the next few weeks of holiday activities. We’ve got lots going on in the stores, and I know I have a busy holiday season at home too. Usually by now, I’ve mapped out all my holiday sewing, but for some reason I’m kind of slow with this this year! I always like to sew something for each family member every year – I think this year it will have to be something small and quick. Does anyone have any ideas? Maybe this is a question I should ask on our Facebook page – please contribute your quick and easy projects that would make great gift ideas there!

I don’t have a lot of time to write today, but I do want to leave you with one of my favourite holiday recipes. This is a recipe that I have had since childhood, and I love to make it every year. It’s quick, easy and delicious!

Snowballs

 ¼ c butter

1 c brown sugar

1 egg, slightly beaten

2 tsp grated orange rind

1 tsp vanilla

½ c flour

1 tsp. baking powder

¼ tsp salt

1 c finely chopped dates

¾ c icing sugar

1 tbsp soft butter

5 tsp water

1 ½ c coconut

Melt ¼ cup butter. Stir in brown sugar, add egg, orange rind and vanilla. Mix and stir in dry ingredients and dates.  Spread in greased 8” square pan and bake at 350° oven for about 25 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool until you can handle. Cut into about 1 ¼” – 1 ½”  squares. Remove them one at a time from the pan and roll into a ball between your palms. Mix up an icing glaze with the icing sugar, soft butter and water. Dip each ball into the icing and then roll in coconut. Enjoy!

Until next time!
