Project 1… Started!

It’s official – my sewing journey has begun.  Of course, it started with about an hour of learning how to properly thread my hand-me-down serger…  but it has started!  Today was the day that I finally unpacked and set up my “sewing room” in our new house.  When I say “room,” I mean the multi-purpose, catch-all space used as a guest room, my husbands closet, my music/practicing space, and my sewing area.  Until today, it held all the little bits we’ve come across while unpacking our house that we had no idea what to do with.  Now they are in my hubby’s office.  Heehee ;)  Just kidding!

My first project will be a retro-style apron.  So far, I’ve just serged the edges of the fabric and are waiting for them to finish washing and drying, but I’m excited!  I have a feeling that I will come across more issues throughout my journey than just having trouble threading the serger.  However, I don’t live close enough to my mum anymore to run over and get her help, so I’d love to get your advice.  What helpful tidbits have you learned through your sewing experiences?  What are your favourite sewing tips and tools, and do you have any advice to give to a novice seamstress?
