Getting Close to Christmas

December 7, 2010

Isn’t it hard to believe that Christmas is only just over a couple of weeks away? Keith and I are getting excited as our daughter Jenny and her husband will be coming home for a few days over the holidays. Unfortunately though, my youngest will be spending her first Christmas away from us so it will be a bittersweet Christmas in the Atkinson household.

I haven’t had much time to do any holiday sewing this year. My office work is just starting to wind down after all the time away I’ve had this fall so now I can figure out what my next project will be – and I think that this time it will be something for me! I’ve got a really nice piece of fabric that is calling my name to be a jacket and skirt – probably with a bit of embroidery on it too.  Stay posted to see what I’m going to do with it!

I wanted to share with you a new line of patterns that Pam and I found when we were in Houston for Quilt Market a few weeks ago. We found these gorgeous “Gifts ‘n Giggles” patterns – this fresh and exciting sewing pattern line features enchanting wall hanging and pillow keepsakes little girls will adore! They’re perfect for everyday decorating and for gift-giving to celebrate birthdays and other special occasions. Girly giggles are guaranteed with a fun bonus project featuring a magical playtime or dress-up accessory. From sparkly fairy wands and ballerina tutus, to princess hats and tea party sweets – this collection is what little girls’ dreams are made of! And – each pattern includes some party tips and ideas for planning the perfect girl’s party! We’re expecting these patterns in within the next week – there are 12 different ones in all. I’m wishing I had a little girl to sew for now …  If you’re looking for them on our website, you can find them under the Patterns category, and then under “Gifts ‘n Giggles Patterns”

I thought I’d pass on a recipe that Dolores, here in our shipping department, gave to me. I happen to love Brussel Sprouts in any variation, and to me, you have to have them whenever you serve a turkey dinner. With the biggest turkey feast of the year fast approaching, I thought this would be the perfect time to pass this recipe on. Even people who don’t normally like Brussels Sprouts love this one!

Delectable Brussels Sprouts by Dolores

4 cups Brussels sprouts – washed and trimmed
1 chopped onion
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp flour
1 tbsp brown sugar or brown sugar splenda
½ tsp dry mustard powder
½ c skim milk
1 c sour cream (fat free preferably)
Salt to taste

Steam sprouts until just tender crisp. While sprouts are steaming, sauté onion and garlic in olive oil until translucent. Whisk in flour, sugar, mustard and salt to taste. Keep whisking and slowing add milk, making sure no lumps form. Cook slowly until thick. Blend in the sour cream and steamed sprouts and heat through. If desired, sprinkle with parsley before serving.

Our Winter classes are now all available in the Class Registration section of our website. We haven’t posted the actual flyer quite yet – probably in another week or so, but you can view all the classes and sign up for them now!

Happy Holiday Sewing!
