Happy New Year 2011

It almost feels like the 2010 holiday season is a distant memory now – I think I’m definitely understanding my mother’s complaints about the older you get, the faster time goes! We had a wonderful but quiet Christmas at our house this year. It was just six of us for the first time in a very long time – just Keith and I along with our son and daughter-in-law who live close to us and our daughter Jenny, whom you know from this blog, and her husband who came home all the way from Rochester, New York. This was her first Christmas home in several years and we loved having them here. I did have a few pangs though at missing my youngest daughter and her husband. It was Rebecca’s first Christmas ever to be away from home, but I know that her in-laws loved having them this year for a change.

Now that the holiday season is over, we’re busy here working on all the exciting events we have coming up in the next few months. In the stores, we have some fabulous classes coming up. We have four “Celebrity” teachers coming in the next few months:

Simon Haskins will be here in March, this year for two days of hands on classes – 2 different projects, one for each day, as well as a trunk show. You can sign up for one, or both, and if you’re coming from out of town, the hotel where we are holding this event at, the Comfort Inn in Surrey at 166th and Fraser Hwy is offering special room rates to the class participants.

Linda McGehee will also be here in March. Linda is from Shreveport, Lousianna, and she is famous for her handbags, her fabric embellishments, and her work with threads and zippers. She has authored many books and designed many patterns, and has been a friend of mine for almost 20 years now. She is offering an afternoon hands on class and an evening trunk show, both in our Surrey store – and I know from working with her in the past that both of these events will be lots of fun, and will give you some great ideas and techniques. Bring any of her books with you to the event and I know she will be happy to autograph them!

In April, one of our favourite teachers, Ron Collins will be back for another 4 days. This time, he’ll be offering a 3 day denim workshop – come and learn how to make the perfect jeans or jean jacket – and learn all of Ron’s fitting and sewing tips and tricks for working with denim.   He’s also offering a one day class where he’ll share with you his professional tricks of the trade!

In June, Diana Cedolia of Palm Beach, Florida will be back with a 2-day workshop on the Husqvarna 5D software. I’ll have more details on this event in a couple of weeks.

As well as these, I also want to mention a great Block of the Month class that we have coming up in our Surrey store soon. If you love embroidery and want to improve your skills, and want to learn how to use and combine all the stitches on your sewing machine, you won’t want to miss this one! Sherry is offering a 10 month Block of the Month of “Simon’s Folly” Quilt. Come on into the Surrey store to see the samples!

I’m excited about a  new ruler we have coming in that should be in stock in about a week. The Quick Points Ruler makes prairie points that are 1½” tall and 3” wide at the base. It makes it so easy to make Prairie Points, 2 colour Ric Rac trim, and even folded fabric “chains” like those gum wrapper chains we made as kids. It makes great quilt finishes, but these trims can be used on so many other projects as well. Here are a couple of videos that show just how the ruler works!

Well, time to go for now. I’ll write again soon!
