Getting Ready for Christmas 2012!

November 19, 2012

Where has this year gone? It seems like I was just starting to prepare for Christmas 2011, and here we are, almost at the end of 2012 already! We’ve had a busy time lately, both in the stores and at home. In-store, our annual Christmas Wish Sale is underway.  We have

some great gift ideas on special in this flyer. I love the sewing charms and jewelry that we’ve just brought in. The charms and bracelets are selling quickly so shop early for the best selection! You’ll also find some unbelievable prices on sewing machines in all the brands we carry in both our stores -   I know that every sew-er would love to find a new serger, or sewing/embroidery machine wrapped up under their tree on Christmas morning!

We’ve still got some great classes coming up in both our stores. We’re looking forward to having Cathy McClean, Sulky Educator and all-round notions expert visit both of our stores later this week. If you’re in the area, sign up for her “Notions Commotion” class, Thursday evening (Nov. 22) in our Abbotsford store from 7:00 – 9:00; Friday evening (Nov. 23) in our Surrey store, also from 7:00 – 9:00. The class fee is only $5.00 and we’ll have refreshments and prizes there.

Life is busy at home right now too. Last month, we were thrilled to have my daughter, her husband, and our new baby grandson (6 mths old) come to stay with us for a few months until they move on to their next home. Here’s a photo of Grandpa Keith welcoming this beautiful boy! It’s wonderful to have the chance to get to know this new little one, especially since more than likely he’ll be a long drive or plane ride away from us in a few months. This Christmas will be especially bright for us having both our grandchildren and 2 out of 3 children close by. And 2013 will be a wonderful year as we’ve learned that our youngest daughter is expecting her first child next year so we’ll be triply blessed with grandchildren.

We’re starting to plan for our holiday baking, so I thought I’d share with you one of my favourite candy recipes. This is an easy to make candy that makes a gift that is always appreciated – at any time of year!

Judi’s Favourite Almond Butter Crunch

1½ c. chopped almonds, toasted carefully in the oven until light brown

1 c. butter

1¼ c. white sugar

2 tbsp light corn syrup

2 tbsp water

2 c semi-sweet chocolate chips

  1. In a heavy saucepan, combine butter, sugar, corn syrup and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture boils. Using a candy thermometer, continue cooking and stirring until candy reaches hard crack stage (300-310°). Remove from heat.
  2. Working quickly, stir in 1 c. of the almonds and pour mixture into a buttered shallow baking pan. (I use a cookie sheet with sides). Tips pan from side to side to spread candy evenly in the pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the candy brittle. When the chips are soft and starting to melt, spread the chocolate evenly over the candy. Sprinkle with remaining chopped almonds.
  3. Cool to room temperature. When cool, break into bite-size pieces.

This is a delicious candy that makes a great holiday gift – put it in a pretty tin with a bow on top!

Time for me to run now. Watch your emails for our “Black Friday” specials for the November 23rd weekend!

Happy Sewing,
